Top 20 Dog Breeds for 2020

We all think that our dog is #1 and who are we kidding, we're not wrong! The AKC has ranked the top 20 dog breeds based off of their 2019 stats. Let's count down to number one. 

20. Shih Tzu

Shih Tzus make great companion dogs. They are affectionate, happy, and outgoing. They are often found following their people from room to room in the house just to keep close. These pups do great with other pets and even children.

19. Doberman Pinscher

The Doberman is a strong muscular dog who needs plenty of exercise as they have a lot of energy. They are very loyal to their families and to children if raised properly around them. They can weigh up to 90 pounds and can live to be 12 years old.

18. Miniature Schnauzer

Schnauzers take on a spunky personality with a lot of energy. They are usually extroverted and just want to have fun.

17. Great Dane

This giant of a dog has a sweet and sensitive personality. Their size can be a lot to handle as they like to think they are lap dogs, but just a flick of the tail is enough to knock someone over. They make a good family dog because they are loyal and loving.

16. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 

These small pups are affectionate, gentle, and graceful. You can tell just by looking at their nice wavy fur. Their coat comes in 4 different colors and is silky to the touch.

15. Siberian Husky

These fluff balls are loyal, mischievous, and outgoing. They were born to be in a pack. This makes them feel right at home with their family. Since they are energetic they need plenty of exercise.

14. Boxer

Boxers are very muscular and athletic. They are also known as the clown of dog breeds because they are fun loving. Even with their love of fun they are very bright and learn tricks quickly. These pups take their job as watch dog very seriously as they protect their family.

13. Australian Shepherd

If you are in search of a herding dog for your farm then you've found a keeper. These dogs are extremely smart and hard working. The other good news is they are trainable as well so, you can have the perfect sidekick everyday.

Don't let these sweet teddy bear faces fool you. Beneath a silky smooth coat is a tenacious, feisty, and brave little soul. This low allergen dog will give you a lifetime of love and companionship.

11. Dachshunds

With a long body and little legs you can't miss dachshunds anywhere. These little dogs, although not made for strenuous activity, are strong, smart, and vigilant. They even make excellent guard dogs with their big bark.

These pups are small, but oh so strong! They have muscular powerful thighs and a deep chest. This bright pup can work all day long. Bred to herd cattle they are fearless and independent.

9. German Shorthaired Pointer

German Shorthaired Pointers are what owners call "the perfect pointer". These dogs are made for working long days in the field. They are known as noble and aristocratic. Up for any type of physical activity they make for the perfect adventure dog.

8. Rottweilers

These playful pups don't know that they aren't a lap dog. They are courageous, but not aggressive. Early training will help the Rottie tune in their territorial instincts for good.

7. Beagle

These little guys live life by their nose. They are happiest when they are tracking down an interesting scent. Their bark is half a howl and not at all yappy. Now they are bred to be companion dogs, but with their hound lineage they cannot deny their sniffer.

6. Poodle

Toy, miniature, or standard, the poodle is an athletic wonder. Although the standard poodle has more strength and athleticism all sizes of poodles can be trained up to be in excellent shape. This breed is very smart and should not be allowed to become bored because that's when they get mischievous.

5. Bulldog

A bulldogs short snout can make it difficult for them to breathe especially in the summer, but they do require regular moderate exercise along with a healthy diet to help keep their bodies "trim". These cute little rollie pollies are known for being calm and friendly, as well as a fantastic companion.

4. French Bulldog

These bat eared cuties are found more prominently in the city because their size is perfect for apartment living and they don't require very much outdoor exercise. They aren't barkers and tend to get along with every human and animal no matter their size.

3. Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are easily trained and very eager to please their humans. These pups enjoy any type of outdoor activity. They look for a strong pack leader and this helps them to keep a mild temperament. Friendly with just about anyone makes them the perfect family dog.

2. German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is very loyal and protective of its family. They will even go as far as to put their life on the line for their loved ones. Reaching great speeds there is a beauty to their stride.

1. Labrador

Coming in at number one is the lab! Good natured and hardworking these dogs have been great helpers to man kind. They help with search and rescue. Also known to be a great breed for a guide dog there isn't anything labs can't do. Very intelligent and high energy they do well working and adventuring anywhere you need to go! Not to mention they come in a variety of different colors.
